History of Costa Cruises
Italian Luxury on the Waves of the World’s Oceans
Founded in 1854 in Genoa, Italy, Costa Cruises began as a family business under the name Giacomo Costa fu Andrea. Initially focused on cargo transport, the company shipped olive oil and textiles between Italy and Mediterranean ports. Thanks to its strategic location and entrepreneurial spirit, the company grew rapidly, acquiring its first specialized cargo ship in 1924.
A turning point came in the post-war era: in 1948, Costa launched its first passenger voyage from Genoa to South America aboard the Anna C. This marked the company’s transition from cargo to passenger services, opening new growth opportunities. Between the 1950s and 1970s, Costa Cruises expanded its fleet, introducing the Federico C — one of the first ships equipped with air conditioning and private cabins. The company opened new routes across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.
In 1986, Costa became the first European cruise line to operate regular routes to the Caribbean, strengthening its global market presence. In 1997, a major milestone was reached when Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest cruise conglomerate, acquired a controlling stake in Costa Cruises. This spurred fleet modernization, technological innovation, and enhanced services.
In the 21st century, Costa Cruises focuses on sustainability. Its flagship vessels, Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana, run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), reducing CO₂ emissions and ensuring greener voyages. Costa’s ships boast contemporary designs inspired by Italian culture, fine dining led by renowned chefs, and a wide range of family-friendly entertainment.

SOME RECOMMENDATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS
AIRPORT, SEAPORT, TRAIN STATION
Be especially cautious in these places. Never leave your luggage unattended. Keep your belongings close and in sight. Avoid exchanging large sums of money, as it will not be needed on the way to the hotel or ship. Do not display large amounts of cash in public.
ON THE SHIP
Do not entrust your luggage to individuals who are not crew members. KEEP YOUR DOCUMENTS, MONEY, VALUABLES, AND AIRLINE TICKETS IN YOUR CABIN SAFE.
ON EXCURSIONS
• Cruise companies offer English-language excursions, which can be booked at the tourist office onboard.
• Carry only as much cash as needed for the day.
• Do not be late for bus boarding at the start or during the excursion.
• Arrive on time at the designated meeting point during stops.
• Do not leave money or valuables on the bus—the driver is not responsible for them.
ON THE STREET
• You should not carry personal documents with you - they will be completely replaced by a cruise card and a copy of your passport, certified by the ship’s stamp.
• Do not tell strangers your cabin number on the ship or hotel room.
• In case of theft or loss of traveler’s checks or credit cards, cancel them immediately. To do this, you need to call your bank.
• On the street, try to avoid street demonstrations and other large gatherings of people. Crowds are a favorite place for pickpockets, who, unfortunately, are everywhere. When traveling by public transport, prepare money for travel in advance.
• Do not let strangers remember where you keep money and valuables.
• Do not take large sums of money with you without special need. Try not to carry money in handbags. If you are used to a bag on a long strap, be sure to support it firmly while walking.
• Do not wear jewelry while walking down the street.
• If you are going on a group tour, ask the driver not to leave the bus at the parking lots.
• Carry video cameras and cameras only on a strap and over the shoulder.
• Refuse all offers of flowers and other items, as such actions are aimed at distracting you and making the thief’s job easier. Avoid street card and dice players.
• When you go for a walk with your family or a group, agree in advance where you will meet in case one of you gets lost.
• Do not buy jewelry and household appliances on the street.
• On the terraces of bars and restaurants, do not hang bags on the back of the seat or put them on the floor.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION
If you are threatened with physical harm, do not resist. Try to remember the attacker’s appearance (height, build, hair, eyes, nose, ears, distinctive features, clothing, footwear, etc.), as well as the circumstances of the attack (time, place, direction in which the attacker fled; registration number and make of their vehicle). Be sure to report the incident to the nearest police station.
MEDICAL SERVICES ONBOARD
Every ship has a doctor and a nurse, whose services are available 24/7 during the cruise. The medical office’s working hours are published in the cruise’s daily newsletter. The facility is equipped with modern medical equipment but provides a limited range of services. Professional medical services and pharmacy supplies are subject to charges. Medical assistance for alleviating symptoms of various illnesses is available in the onboard clinic.
If you have special medical conditions, please inform your agent at the time of booking.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE
Currency exchange offices are available at the "Information" desks on cruise ships. Convertible currencies (US dollars, Euros, British pounds, etc.) and traveler’s checks in these currencies are accepted for exchange. A commission fee applies to all exchange transactions.
DINING IN CRUISE SHIP RESTAURANTS
On cruise ships, dining typically takes place in two shifts. Meal times are assigned onboard during embarkation and may change depending on the cruise program. Check your dining schedule in the daily Today newspaper.
If you selected a preferred dining shift at the time of booking, your request will be taken into account. However, please note that the cruise administration reserves the right to assign meal times for any passenger.
TELEPHONE USAGE
While in port, it is advisable to use public payphones or phones in bars and restaurants, as calling directly from the ship is significantly more expensive (at least €9 per minute).
GRATUITIES
Gratuities will be included in your final bill and must be paid on the last day of the cruise. The approximate cost is €11 per day, depending on the duration of the cruise.
DRESS CODE ONBOARD
There is no strict dress code on the ship, but for your comfort, we recommend casual and comfortable attire during the day, as well as sportswear and swimwear for pool areas. Comfortable footwear is essential.
In main restaurants and lounges, beachwear is not permitted. For breakfast and dinner, we suggest wearing long shorts or skirts. For dinner, elegant attire is encouraged—women may wear dresses or suits, while men should opt for a suit or a shirt with trousers. Walking barefoot is discouraged.
For excursions, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and footwear. Please remember that when visiting religious sites, monuments, or temples, a more modest and conservative dress style is required.
BEFORE DEPARTURE TO THE AIRPORT
Please ensure you have the following documents:
• Passports for all travelers.
• Airline tickets.
• Travel vouchers.
• Insurance policies.
• Driver’s license (if planning to rent a car).
• Notarized authorization from both parents (for children traveling without parents) or from the second parent (if traveling with only one parent).
Lack of sufficient cash (at least 50 Euros per person per day) may be grounds for deportation.
DEPARTURE AND ARRIVAL
Your tour begins at the airport 3 hours before the departure time indicated on your airline ticket.
Attention: We strongly recommend that you arrive at the airport on time, following the principle: "Better to spend an extra hour in duty-free shops than to lose your paid vacation." Your airline tickets cannot be reissued or refunded once issued.
Boarding procedure
To board your flight, you must go through customs control:
• If you do not have items or valuables subject to mandatory customs inspection, you may pass through the Green Corridor without filling out a customs declaration. If you do have such items, you must complete a customs declaration (forms are available on tables or special stands before the customs area).
• Cash between ,000 and ,000 USD (or equivalent in other currencies, including hryvnias) must be DECLARED at customs.
• Customs control is conducted in the same terminal as flight check-in. KEEP YOUR CUSTOMS DECLARATION UNTIL YOU RETURN TO UKRAINE.

• There are no restrictions on bringing personal belongings into the country. If necessary, customs can provide documents confirming their legal importation.
• In EU countries, duty-free import limits per person are as follows:
- Alcohol: spirits (over 22%) – 1 liter; liqueurs and fortified wines (up to 22%) – 2 liters; light wines (9-11%) – 3 liters.
- Tobacco: cigarettes – 200 pcs; cigars – 50 pcs; tobacco – 250 g.
- Other items: coffee – 500 g; tea – 100 g; perfume and cologne – 50 g or 1/4 liter.
Note: Duty-free alcohol and tobacco imports are only allowed for persons 17 years and older; coffee imports are allowed for persons 15 years and older.
Please check with your travel agency for updates on customs regulations before departure.
Proceed to the check-in counter to register for your flight and receive your boarding pass.
The check-in counter number is displayed on the central airport screen next to your flight number. Seat assignments are made at check-in. If you are traveling with a child or prefer specific seats, arrive early for better availability.
After check-in, proceed to border control before boarding your flight.
Once you have completed all formalities, proceed to the departure gate listed on your boarding pass.
UPON ARRIVAL
You must independently go through passport control and customs clearance. At passport control, present your passport with a valid visa. After passport control, you will enter the customs zone, where random inspections may take place.
Important:
- Keep a close watch on your personal belongings while at the airport.
- Avoid exchanging large amounts of cash, as incidents of theft targeting tourists have increased.
Once everyone has checked in with the tour guide, the entire group will proceed together to the designated transfer bus, accompanied by a local representative. During the transfer, your guide will provide important information about your stay.
In case of any issues during your cruise, please contact your travel agency immediately.
CHECK-IN AND BOARDING THE CRUISE SHIP
Upon arrival at the port, you will receive luggage tags, which must be attached to your baggage.
Don’t forget to write your last name (in Latin letters), the ship’s name (in Latin letters), and your cabin number on each tag!
Usually, porters fill in this information themselves! However, you must double-check all details. Your luggage will be delivered to your cabin door (typically no later than an hour after departure). Keep only your carry-on bag with valuables and essentials with you. If your baggage is delayed, please visit the information desk in the ship’s central lobby—your tags may have fallen off, or the details may have been illegible.
Check-in typically begins 4 hours before departure, and all passengers must be on board at least 1 hour before the ship’s departure. DO NOT CONFUSE CHECK-IN WITH BOARDING. Check-in confirms your arrival and readiness for the cruise. This process involves document verification and issuing your final cruise documents. It is similar to an airport procedure, where you check in first, then board the plane later.
Upon entering the port terminal, follow the signs displaying your cruise company’s logo and ship’s name to the check-in area. At the check-in area, proceed to the "Information" or "Guest Relations" desk with your vouchers and passports.
Here, you will receive your cruise tickets and a health questionnaire.
Next, proceed to the check-in counters, which register passengers based on cabin numbers (e.g., Counter #1 – Cabins 1101-1300, etc.). VIP passengers (Grand Suites, Suites, Mini-Suites) have dedicated check-in counters. At the check-in counter, present your passport, your cruise ticket, the completed health questionnaire. You will also be asked how you plan to settle your onboard expenses: cash (a note will be made in the system) or credit card (only Visa, American Express, and MasterCard are accepted). Your card details will be stored for onboard transactions.
IMPORTANT: Ensure your credit card has sufficient funds, or settling your account at the end of the cruise may become complicated.
Proceed to boarding according to the queue number assigned at check-in.
Boarding wait times can range from 1 to 2 hours! During this time, you may visit duty-free shops. Follow the signs to the boarding area.
SECURITY CHECK & BOARDING THE SHIP
You must pass through the ship’s security checkpoint. Show your passport and CostaCard (issued at check-in) to the ship’s security officer. Visit the administration desk to hand in your passport and request a copy.
Ensure your passport copy is stamped with the ship’s seal.
After boarding, you can head to the buffet restaurant, where lunch is typically served until 4:00 PM.
RULES FOR DISEMBARKING AND RETURNING ON BOARD
When leaving the ship, you must present your cruise card to the security staff. ONLY AFTER THIS CAN YOU GO ASHORE. Upon returning to the ship, you must pass through a metal detector and present your cruise card (CostaCard). In some cases, a security officer may request a copy of your passport.
GUEST RECEPTION ON BOARD
When boarding, your guests must present their identification documents, and you must sign a special form. You are responsible for covering all expenses related to hosting guests. Guests cannot pay with their own credit cards, as these are not registered with the ship’s payment system and will not be accepted at bars.
Guests must be back on board at least ONE HOUR before the ship departs.
LATE ARRIVAL TO BOARDING
A passenger is considered late if they fail to check in for the cruise on time.
The booking of a late passenger will be canceled, and THE FULL AMOUNT PAID FOR THE CRUISE IS NON-REFUNDABLE!
If you are running late, you MUST notify your travel escort personally (via phone/fax, etc.) or through your travel agency, confirming that you will join the ship at the next port of call. Otherwise, the cruise administration reserves the right to sell the unoccupied cabin!
A passenger is considered left behind if they fail to return to the ship at a port of call.
In every port of departure and stop, the cruise company has a representative office or an authorized agency (contact details are listed in the onboard newsletter).
IMPORTANT! The service for assistance with late arrival or being left behind is subject to an additional fee!
ONBOARD PAYMENT SYSTEM
In European cruises, all prices are listed in EUROS. CASH PAYMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED ON BOARD! Instead, the CostaCard serves as a cruise credit card. It is also your access card to the ship and, along with a passport copy stamped by the ship, acts as an identification document during the cruise. All onboard expenses, except for casino transactions, are charged to this card. The CostaCard is issued during cruise check-in.
If you choose to pay your onboard expenses with a credit card, ONLY ONE CARD CAN BE USED. If payments are made from multiple credit cards (two or more), ALL expenses made during the cruise will be deducted from ALL CARDS. Refund processing may take at least six months.
We recommend KEEPING ALL RECEIPTS UNTIL THE END OF THE CRUISE to monitor your expenses and avoid any miscalculations by the cruise administration.
Cash payments in euros are accepted in the casino. Currency exchange is available at the reception desk. There are also ATMs onboard for cash withdrawals.
At the end of the cruise, you can settle your onboard expenses using cash, traveler’s checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express). Other payment methods are NOT accepted.
END OF CRUISE
SETTLEMENT OF ONBOARD SERVICES USED DURING THE CRUISE
On the final evening, we recommend carefully reviewing your expenses and preparing the necessary amount in advance.
Attention!
For the FINAL SETTLEMENT, it is recommended to HAVE ALL RECEIPTS issued to you during the cruise.
In the morning, as early as possible, proceed to the reception desk to complete the final settlement.
PAYMENT IN CASH. After verifying that there are no errors in your final bill, pay the required amount. If you disagree or have doubts about the bill, consult with the accounting manager, who is located next to the reception and has full information about your accounts.
PAYMENT BY CREDIT CARD. Ensure that there are no errors in your final bill, then sign it. Don’t forget to take your copy of the bill! The money will be automatically deducted from your card.
After settling all bills, the receptionist will deactivate your CostaCard. Only then can you disembark.
OTHERWISE, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE SHIP!
Attention! After the cruise ends, do not forget to collect your passport!
LUGGAGE
On the final evening, luggage tags will be delivered to your cabin, similar to the ones you received upon embarkation. These tags should be attached to your luggage and placed in the corridor outside your cabin no later than 1:00 AM. Do not place valuables, expensive photographic equipment, or electronics in your checked luggage. Never leave documents in your checked luggage, including your passport, return flight tickets, or accommodation vouchers for post-cruise stays. You will retrieve your luggage at the baggage claim area in the port after disembarkation.
TRAVEL ADVISORY FOR INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS
(This information applies to all countries and may be useful for your future travels abroad.)
If you are planning a trip abroad, be aware that some countries pose a real risk of exposure to severe infectious and parasitic diseases that affect vital organs and may lead to fatal outcomes.
Among the most dangerous diseases are: Cholera, Plague, Yellow Fever, HIV/AIDS, Malaria (which has a high mortality rate), Rabies (hydrophobia).
Due to the rise in international tourism, cases of these diseases have increased, often due to failure to follow essential preventive measures. To protect yourself, follow these simple preventive rules:
• Drink only safe water and beverages (boiled or bottled water in factory-sealed packaging).
• Thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables with safe water.
• Avoid street food and unlicensed restaurants.
• Avoid swallowing water while swimming in pools or open water.
• Practice personal hygiene (wash hands with soap before eating, cooking, and after using the toilet).
• Avoid contact with stray animals. If bitten or scratched, seek medical help immediately. Untreated rabies infections are 100% fatal.
• Protect yourself from insect bites (use insect repellent creams, sprays, etc.). Malaria prevention: medication like Delagil is available at pharmacies but should be taken only after consulting a doctor.
• Avoid casual sexual encounters and always use protection.
• Do not buy clothing from unknown sources to prevent exposure to contagious diseases.
• Do not walk barefoot or wear open shoes in certain regions.
Symptoms and risks of the most dangerous infectious diseases

Cholera outbreaks are increasing in many countries. The highest-risk areas in Europe and Asia include India, Laos, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Afghanistan. The cholera bacterium enters the body through contaminated food or water. High-risk foods include raw fruits, vegetables, milk, and unprocessed liquids. Contaminated objects like dishes and linens can also transmit the disease. Incubation period: up to 5 days. Symptoms: severe diarrhea and vomiting, leading to dehydration. Without timely treatment, cholera can be fatal.
PLAGUE
Plague bacteria are carried by fleas that live on rodents. There are two primary types:
- Bubonic plague: Spread through flea bites or contact with infected animals. Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes and high fever.
- Pneumonic plague: Spread through airborne droplets. Symptoms include sudden fever, chills, severe headaches, difficulty breathing, and coughing up blood.
Incubation period: A few hours to 6 days. Immediate medical attention is necessary for survival.
YELLOW FEVER
A severe viral disease spread by mosquitoes. Infection can occur both in urban and rural areas. Symptoms: High fever, headaches, and rash. Incubation period: 3–6 days. Yellow fever is common in 47 countries in South America and Africa. Vaccination is mandatory before traveling to these regions and remains effective for 10 years. It must be administered at least 10 days before departure.

Financial issues
Financial matters on board Costa Cruises ships are an essential aspect of planning your cruise. Below is a detailed description of the key financial aspects to consider while traveling with Costa Cruises.
1. Costa Personal Card
Upon boarding, each passenger receives a personal Costa card, which will be waiting for you in your cabin. This card serves multiple functions: it acts as your cabin key, an identification document, and a payment method on board. All purchases and additional services (except casino bets) are made using this card, and expenses are automatically charged to your cabin account. You can top up the card via a terminal.
2. Credit Card Registration
To simplify the payment process, it is recommended to register your credit card at the beginning of the cruise. This can be done at interactive kiosks or the customer service desk. Once registered, your onboard expenses will be automatically charged to your credit card. The following credit cards are accepted on board: American Express, VISA, MasterCard, and CartaSi (provided that the back of the card states its usability abroad).
Note: electronic cards (such as Visa Electron, PostePay, Postamat, and Cirrus Maestro) are not accepted on board. It is advisable to consult with your bank before departure.
Important: cruise experts from Four Gates Group recommend topping up the onboard card with cash. If you link your bank card to the onboard account, your bank may freeze an amount equal to your onboard expenses. These frozen funds will be returned, but the process can take anywhere from several days to a month.

• Euro (€) – the primary currency on most Costa Cruises ships.
• US Dollar ($).

All expenses on board, made using the Costa personal card, will be accumulated on your onboard account. A final statement detailing all charges will be sent to your cabin on the evening before disembarkation. If there is any remaining balance on your Costa card at the end of the cruise, you can withdraw the funds before leaving the ship.
5. Travel Insurance
It is recommended to arrange travel insurance before your cruise to cover any unexpected circumstances.
6. Gratuities
Gratuities are usually automatically added to your onboard account as a daily service charge. The amount may vary depending on the itinerary and duration of the cruise. You can check gratuity details during booking or onboard.
7. Can You Pay with a Debit Card on Board?
Yes, debit cards are accepted as a payment method on Costa Cruises ships (except for ships operating in Asia). Electronic or prepaid cards are not accepted.
